What is Baroque?

Baroque is a style in art and architecture that developed in Europe from the early 17th to mid 18th century. in the past, some interpreters, especially in England and France, were consider baroque as a mere perversion of the Renaissance style. But this view is now outdated, and in recent years there has been widespread revival of interest in baroque.

What is the characteristic of baroque itself?

The richness and variety of baroque forms make it difficult to characterize the style. But, there is something involved of baroque and make it to be baroque characteristic.

The characteristic of Baroque style is its always use ornamental decoration. The ornamental decoration itself makes baroque looks luxury and expensive. The ornamental decoration also really pay very careful attention in every detail of its ornaments.

Besides ornamental decoration, baroque also use a harmony of dark and light. It uses strong contrasts of light and shadow to augment the dramatic effects of paintings and sculptures, while realism and naturalism are used to enhance normal details exclusive to daily life.

All baroque art was polarized around a set of feelings that had a common field of movement, intensity, tension, and force. And because of that, the baroque found its richest expression in the castle and the opera, two artistic forms in which many arts have to be worked into a harmonious whole.

Until now, many architecture and art still using baroque style. Which is makes that art and architecture looks luxurious. For the example, the architecture of Cathedral Church all over the world is still using baroque style, it used ornamental decoration in the architecture, and it makes the Cathedral Church all over the world looks big and luxury.
